XPD Explainer Video

This 60–90 second explainer video was created to introduce the XPD (Experience & Product Design) specialisation to new students at Singapore Polytechnic. The aim was to break away from traditional course intros and craft a sleek, modern motion piece that feels inspiring, fresh, and student-focused.

Concept & Approach

I started with a simple, focused question: “What is XPD?” From that point, the video takes the viewer on a smooth, visual journey starting from raw ideas and sketches, transitioning through digital design collaboration, and leading toward innovation and real-world product development. The core idea was to keep the concept clean and easy to follow, while using motion, layout, and transitions to maintain visual interest. I treated the motion language like a guided tour: structured, fluid, and slightly playful, designed to reflect what the XPD experience actually feels like

The Solution

Heartz is a pocket-sized memory capsule that captures the emotional signature of a moment. When activated, it records:

  • Heartbeat – representing the emotional intensity of the moment

  • Ambient sound – capturing laughter, conversations, nature, etc.

  • Temperature – reflecting the environmental tone

  • Voice reflection – a brief spoken thought or feeling

Research Insights

Through scenario mapping, user empathy exploration, and interviews with visually impaired individuals, we uncovered key insights: Tactile and auditory cues trigger the strongest memories. Many blind users desire ways to log and revisit life moments that feel meaningful—but current tech is not designed for them. Memory is emotional—yet most devices focus on data, not feeling.

Impact

Heartz challenges the idea that memory must be visual. It empowers the blind community to preserve their lives in ways that are rich, human, and sensory. This project pushed us to question design norms and explore what inclusive, emotion-centered technology could look like. In doing so, it taught us the value of designing for presence, not just for playback.

Design Style

  • Minimal, modern visuals with strong use of whitespace and layered compositions

  • Animated project sketches, prototypes, and UI mockups to spotlight real student work

  • Seamless transitions and motion overlays to add flow and storytelling rhythm

  • Styleframes built around MacBooks, FigJam, and creative tools to feel grounded in reality

Motion Techniques

  • Camera panning through a "design highway" filled with signboards and icons

  • Click-and-pop animations for tactile feedback moments

  • Smooth macro-to-micro transitions between scenes to guide viewer attention

  • Dynamic type and bold text reveals to highlight key messages

Audio Design

  • Calming piano-backed track for a thoughtful, introspective tone

  • Layered SFX like typing, UI sounds, and soft risers for motion cues

  • Voiceover written to be direct but warm, with pauses that match pacing and emotion

These memory capsules can be accessed through a voice-navigated mobile app, where moments are organized by emotional tone (e.g. joy, grief, calm, warmth), not by date. This makes it easier for blind users to retrieve memories based on how they felt.
